Is Massage a Regulated Profession?

Yes, the practice of massage therapy is regulated under the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 (RHPA). Only professionals who have completed the training and meet with competency requirements of the College of Massage Therapists of British Columbia (CMTBC) can work as “Massage Therapist” or known as a “Registered Massage Therapist.” When you are looking to seek a massage look for these titles and also ask to look at their registration. All members are required to maintain their registration with the CMTBC to be members.

Do Massages Hurt?

Applying pressure on any tensed muscles does hurt but in a way that it loosens up the tension slowly and makes you relaxed. Slight discomfort during a massage is normal but you must feel relaxed after completion of a massage. If a massage seems too hard or the pressure seems too much, you can let your massage therapist know about your discomfort and they will adjust their techniques to suit your comfort.

How Often Can One Have Massages?

It really depends from person to person. For most people, biweekly massages are a perfect frequency. But if you are seeking massage under the recommendation of your doctor for medical reasons (like a sports injury) your doctor will guide you about the correct frequency.

Is Massage Therapy Covered Under MSP?

A Registered Massage Therapist visit is covered partially ($23 per session) by the Medical Services Plan of BC (MSP) for only those who qualify for premium assistance.

Is Massage Therapy Covered Under My Health Benefit?
